Layla Dagher Explores the Duality of the City and Nature in her latest Solo Show “Dialogue Imprévu-Unexpected Dialogue” at Art on 56th Gallery
Layla Dagher presents her latest series “Dialogue Imprévu /Unexpected Dialogue” for the second time at Art on 56th Gallery, in which she explores new techniques, methods and a fresh take on her beloved themes; the city of Beirut and the landscape of Lebanon.
“The city and the landscape are two different worlds; what is in common is how they transform space.”
Layla Dagher
Layla Dagher is a contemporary, Lebanese visual artist based in Beirut. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as well as a Masters of Visual Arts degree from the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA), the latter of which she earned with honours. She is known for exploring cityscapes in a whimsical style, combining figures and still lives within the abstracted compositions.
In her latest series, “Dialogue Imprévu-Unexpected Dialogue” which she unveils at Art on 56th Gallery for the second time, she explores the technique of collage using Kraft paper. The theme of choice is the duality of the city and the landscape, or Nature. Her intention is to create a dialogue between these two different worlds; after all, one is rigid and structured, while the other is fluid and organic. The layering process in collage is naturally constructive; she recreates the worlds that she loves, Beirut and the landscape of Lebanon. In parallel, these two worlds are not so different after all.
Dagher is a Professor of Fine Arts at the Notre Dame University (NDU), and a member of the Syndicate of Lebanese Artists. She has participated in numerous solo and group shows in Beirut. She also has exhibited internationally, participating in shows in Tokyo, Seoul and Paris. Her work is featured in esteemed private and public collections including the Lebanese Ministry of Culture.
